In just a few days, we will usher in a brand new year, and most of us will utter three words to everyone we encounter, “Happy New Year!”
What exactly do we mean when we utter these three simple words? I mean, how do we know it is a happy new year if it just started and we are not even 24 hours into the year? Does it make sense to wish someone a happy new year?
Absolutely!
You see, when we say happy new year, we wish for the person to experience good fortune, general wellbeing, and contentment throughout the year. It is a kind, sweet, and loving gesture that your life will be full of blessings.
The bigger question is, what are you going to do to make sure that you have a happy year? An excellent place to start is with your one word and one scripture for the year.
Your one word will keep you focused on what is important to you for the year. And your scripture text will encourage you to get in Yah’s Word to stay connected to your power source. The two combined are a great recipe to ensure that you will thrive throughout the year no matter what comes your way!
So, what is your one word? What scripture text have you selected? Perhaps, you feel led to continue with 2019’s word. If so, can you choose a different scripture to “sit with” so that you expand your knowledge of Yah’s Word?
Or, if this is your first year or you find yourself stuck and uncertain of what your word should be, here are a few suggestions to get you started.
- Pray for guidance. You can pray, “Yah, what is it that you would have me to focus on this year? Make it plain and clear to me so that I can be in the center of your will.”
- Get in the Word. Is there a particular scripture that resonates with you? When you read that scripture, what word jumps out to you?
- Examine your relationship with Yahweh. Is there something missing in your relationship? Is it trust? Patience? Discernment? Could one of these be your word?
- Notice the patterns. What are you repeatedly praying about? Have you noticed that a particular word keeps coming up in your thoughts or your conversations?
Why is this exercise even important? Because there is power in it.
Over the past five years, I have heard testimony after testimony about how amazing the word that you have selected comes to life throughout the year as you experience the natural ups and downs of life. I am amazed as I listen to a number of you share how the scripture text opens you up to studying the Word and learning something new about Yah and your relationship with Him. There is something divinely special about this annual ritual.
If you want to experience a happy new year, become intentional about how you start it off. And the best place is always with Yah and in His Word.
